Beards, nice to look at and even nicer to grow. Why would someone grow a beard? Do they like an Amish look or dwell in the forests with the lumberjack? I like my beard because it grows well and it insulates my face. But as a child I vividly remember seeing my fathers beard and thinking, ‘I’m never going to grow a beard.’ Perhaps it’s a man thing. I just want one now to fulfil an unearthed bliss.
I wanted to see some opinions from other people on the subject, so I briefly interviewed a more senior policeman named Greg. He’d been wearing blue for 29 years and I concluded he would have seen a few people on the street over that course of time. In my opinion I figured a drunken man donning a beard would be more intimidating than a drunken man smooth-faced. Greg said no and he said that there isn’t a majority of criminals/troublemakers with beards, which I was curious about. The bushranger is less seen in our streets these days. From when he first started patrolling the streets at least a third of people had beards and it’s still the same. Up until two years ago policeman were allowed facial hair. Now they aren’t unless for medical reasons. The U.S. highlight the medical reason as pseudofolliculitis barbae commonly referred to as razor bumps.
Next I reached out to friends through Facebook and asked them. A majority prefer them well trimmed, not long and bushy. Others feel they would not look good with a beard and then others think it improves their look. So I’m starting to feel that the growth of the beard is linked in with an improvement on their look. I myself like the beard of Gimli from Lord of the Rings but I wouldn’t be able to tame such a beast on my face. Though it may not seem like there is a rise in beards on the street there has certainly been a change in the growth. The beard is now seen as a sport with The World Beard and Moustache Championships first held 1990 in Höfen-Enz, Germany. It’s an exciting time of the year which should be acknowledged by all men and most, if not all, women. The Beards are a band in Australia that stand for beards to say the least. They comically shun those without beards and sent a letter of complaint to Julia Gillard after she ridiculed a new member of Parliament for daring to grow a beard. The Beards grow their beards as they fear no ridicule and they are trying to show others not to be scared of the way you look, which is a decent way to encourage people.
Beards are for everyone and no one should say you look ugly with one, for they may look awfully unmanly with a smooth face and branded clothes. Stand resolute in the choices of the way you look because ultimately you’re the only one that should care. Be an individual.
